Farm Fresh To You

Recently, my friend Olivia Frisbie and I signed up for a terrific service provided by Farm Fresh to You; a California based co-op of farmers who deliver to your door your choice of seasonal, organic and locally grown produce. Today was my first delivery. Pretty Awesome!

Plastic Bags Suck

Each year the U.S uses 84 billion plastic bags, a significant portion of the 500 billion used worldwide. They are not biodegradable, and are making their way into our oceans, and subsequently, the food chain. Stronger, reusable bags are an inexpensive and readily available option.

Furoshiki is the eco-friendly wrapping cloth; originating from japanese culture where it promotes caring for the environment and reducing waste. Using techniques similar to origami, it can be used for gift wrapping, grocery shopping or simply as decor. Try Furoshiki wrapping using a large silk scarf or a beautiful square piece of vintage fabric. Reusable bags, such as furoshiki can help reduce the impact to our environment. Its versatility allows you to wrap almost anything regardless of its shape or size.

Ice Capades

Flavored Ice Cubes. For a Passion Fruit & Basil Cube, Mix juice with chopped fresh basil cube. Serve with seltzer for the non-alcohol-drinkers. A Ginger & Honey cube, made with equal parts water, honey, and grated ginger, complements a vodka tonic. I also like the look of an oversize, irregular chunk of ice. Just freeze water in a loaf pan and use an ice pick to break off pieces.

Weekend Shenanigans

Holy weekend shenanigans! I spent a good portion of the last few days in front of a camera, first helping my friend Nehemias out with his inspirational spot, shot in the Malibu Hills. Above is a photo from our friend Natalie's Surprise Birthday - I have to say it was one of the best Sundays I've had in a long time. Your Mission 07.29.11

Your weekend mission,
should you choose to accept

1) Take a midnight stroll.
2) Play Mad Libs with a friend.
3) Try something Weird. One obvious way to move out of your comfort zone is to do something new. When you choose something new you may choose something that is line with your personality. So your experiences can become limited. Instead, choose something that's out of character for you. Start by reading about a random topic at Wikipedia. Visit a museum and sit and sketch. Take a friend to the driving range and hit some golf balls. Add an unexpected RSS-feed about something you normally never read about. Or learn to make eco-friendly cleaning products. The weekend is your oyster - so go out and enjoy something new.

Epsom Salts and Ginger Soak

This bath opens pores and eliminates toxins and also help to eliminate pain. Stir one cup of epsom salts and 2 tablespoons of ginger in a cup of water first, then add to the bath.

Overalls and Summer Memories

There is something about growing up in Kansas that leaves me with a special nostalgia for denim overalls. Maybe it was those carefree humid summer nights of driving with nothing better to do, field parties, sonic slushes, jumping off bridges into watering holes, typical midwest teenage shenanigans.

Throw an Amazing Party in a Tiny Apartment.

HAVE A BIG, FUN PARTY IN A TINY APARTMENT

Set up everything to scale: to create a feeling of space, minimize party supplies. Rather than having one big traffic-block bar, put out several ice buckets filled with bottles of beer and splits of champagne no glasses required. For food, no space-hogging ham or turkey. Serve niblets, like mini-sandwiches. - Mini-sandwiches -close-contact friendly - no garlic.

Keep the party flowing:
To stave off log jams in front of the bathroom, put mirror in the hallway, so ladies who just want to touch up their make-up won't hog the powder room.

Let the furniture multitask:
You don't need the TV - stow it in the closet and use the trolley as a rolling bar cart.

Free up the bedroom:
That's valuable real estate replace your bed pillows with decorative cushions or throws from the couch.
Don't limit the guest list! Invite everyone you want to. If it gets super-crowded, the party will thin out naturally.

It's social darwinism!

Your Mission 07.22.11

Your weekend mission,
should you choose to accept

1) Book tickets to a upcoming concert.
2) Take a warm sea salt bath for 20 minutes.
3) Act like a nine-year-old. To keep stress at bay, it's important for adults to always have a little kid in them. Here are a few ideas for how to retain that child-like wonder: Spin around in circles until you get dizzy and then lie down and watch the ceiling spin. Skip. It's surprising how free and happy a person can feel by skipping down the street. Watch your favorite childhood movie. Eat an ice cream cone. Play tag or hide-and-seek. Catch lighting bugs. Swing at a playground. Just remember, sometimes our silly side needs to come out and play. Follow this list and your inner child will always be satisfied.

Homemade Vitamin C Serum

3 1/2 teaspoon distilled water (at room temperature)
1/2 teaspoon L-ascorbic acid powder (vitamin C)
1 1/2 teaspoon vegetable glycerin
1 dark glass bottle

Clean the bottle with rubbing alcohol or boil it in hot water. Let the bottle to cool and dry. Add the L-ascorbic acid to the bottle. Add the distilled water. Shake the bottle o use a something to stir it up, until all the L-asorbic acid is dissolved. Add the vegetable glycerin. Put on the cap and shake well, until everything is blended. Use up and make a new batch every 5 to 7 days. L-ascorbic acid is highly unstable, so you have to make a new batch frequently.
