Your Mission

Your weekend mission,
should you choose to accept

1) Be yourself, everyone else is taken. - Oscar Wilde

2) Take pleasure in the successes of others rather than using their successes as a yardstick to measure your own life.

3) Nowadays blissful feelings seem to be in shorter supply than ever before. In fact, according to the United States General Social Survey, a national poll that gauges social trends, women in this country have reported being less happy each year since 1972, and we're currently at an all-time happiness low. One explanation: "There are so many opportunities available to women now, but with that comes a lot of pressure to be fully self-actualized--to have the amazing career and family, and the ability to balance it all with ease. So you constantly end up feeling disappointed because you're not as happy or successful as you think you should be," says Ariel Gore, author of Bluebird: Women and the New Psychology of Happiness.

Your Mission 02.17.11

Your weekend mission,
should you choose to accept

1) Go 10 mins without using your thumbs. Go ahead... try to pick up a coffee cup.
2) Do one thing at a time. "When walking, walk. When eating, eat."
3) Mindfulness is being aware of your actions and thoughts, and what your senses bring in, in your every day routine. To get more of it into your life, pay attention to the sounds and smells around you or use your non-dominant hand to brush your teeth or other routine activities. It's an instant way of taking yourself off auto-pilot and being more present.

Your Mission

Your valentines weekend mission,
should you choose to accept

1) Eat a lot of chocolate.
2) Take a bubble bath.
3)
Appreciate the loved ones in your life that make you laugh and bring you happiness:

A study done by Harvard Medical School revealed that "happiness can spread from person to person to person in a chain reaction, through social circles." On average, every happy friend you have increases your chance of being happy by 9 percent. Now if happiness is contagious, don't you want to put yourself in a position to catch it?

Happy valentines weekend, my darlings.
xoxo

Palm Springs, how I heart thee... I just walked in the door from a wonderful girls getaway. My friend Joanne is getting married this Fall, so we went up for the night to check out the venue and fun stuff like that. I can't believe, I'm not up there more only being 2 hours away from LA and the hotels are insanely reasonable - plus it's close to cool stuff like Joshua Tree, the Salton Sea and all kinds of historic desert modern architecture.

The Amigo Room is a little gem of a bar located inside the Ace Hotel. Their Specialty drinks feature a variety of mixers made in house go into drinks like the Figa, made with house-infused fig vodka, and King's Margarita, with homemade triple sec. The Facial is my personal favorite made with muddled cucumber & mint, vodka & pineapple juice. When it comes to beer, don't miss out of the King's Highway Beer.

Powder-coating is... A technique for finishing metal objects.

Why powder-coat?
Often used to revamp old car components, it is also a terrific way to give beat-up furniture a brilliant new look. A powder-coated surface is durable, requires little upkeep and is less likely to rust outdoors.

How is it done?
A powder-and-resin mix is electrically charged and sprayed onto stripped metal, which is then heated in an oven for smooth finish. Most shops offer a spectrum of colors, and finishes ranging from flat to high-gloss.

What can I have coated?
Garden furniture, bed frames, lamp bases.

How do I fine a pro?
Check out www.powdercoating.org for a list of shops by state. Some shops take only industrial orders, so call ahead.

Is it expensive?
Having a garden chair power-coated cost $40 to $85 (more prep work, like stripping, puts you at a higher end of the range).

Your Mission

Your weekend mission,
should you choose to accept

1) Be inquisitive like a scientist and curious about nature.
2) QUICK think of 3 things you are thankful for.
3) Passion. There are jobs that you do for money. There are careers, which offer money plus advancement. And there are callings, which are those things you have to do. Americans on average have 12 different jobs and four different careers over their lifetime. The Wealthy have fewer, and I believe it's because they've found their passion, ask yourself: What is it people say I do well? What am I doing with my time? And if that doesn't work: What turned me on as a child - and does it have a corollary in the adult world?

Easy Raised Donuts
from the book Sinister Sprinkles

2 pkg fast raising yeast
2 1/2 tbsp granulated sugar
1 cup water
1 egg beaten
1/3 cup butter, melted
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp salt
3-4 cups flour

In a bowl mix the yeast, sugar and water. Let sit for five minutes for the yeast to activate. Add the egg, butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and salt and mix well. Slowly add in the flour until it's not sticky to the touch. Knead the dough for a couple of minutes. Roll out the dough to about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick and cut out donut shapes and lay them on a baking sheet to raise for 30 minutes. Fry in canola oil at 360 F turing once so both sides cook evenly. Drain on a paper towel.
Since these donuts are the light and airy sort I added a strawberry glaze to mine which consisted of icing sugar, vanilla, warm water and strawberry flavor. Once the donuts cooled I dipped the tops in the the glaze and added my choice of topping. Sprinkles, coconut or even crushed up nuts would be great!
